It doesn't rain that often in California, but when it does, which it did last Friday, I have to find something for Raffy and I to do before we go stir-crazy. So we got to baking that day. We made some chocolate brownies from Baking Unplugged by Nicole Rees. I checked out this book from the library (on my LIST of things to do). I think I would like to own it now. All the recipes seem really simple and best of all no electrical equipment required, which would be great when I bake at night and Raffy is in bed. I don't have to worry about the sound of the mixer waking her up. Every recipe in that book can be done by hand, of course you can cheat and use your mixer too. One downside of the book is that there is not a single photograph of the food. I love when cookbooks have tons of photographs, it helps me know how the end product should look like.

wearing one of my aprons--i think i need to make her her own
Raffy loved to help stir, we made a bit of a mess, but it was really fun to show her that from that liquid batter she was just stirring would turn into brownies she can enjoy later.

Even though I have a sweet tooth, I am actually quite strict about sugar with Raffy. But since she did help make the brownies she should at least get to taste some of it. She really enjoyed it, by letting me know "mmm mmm good". After a couple bites, I took away the rest of the brownie and scarfed it down myself. It wasn't the best brownie I've ever had, but it still was tasty and satisfying.
